Band Camp 2018 Info

I hope you all are having a terrific summer. I am looking forward to seeing you all as everyone begins to trickle in over the next few weeks. I cannot believe that we are two weeks out from day 1, week 1. We have a great season planned with an amazing staff and most importantly, a group of the best band kids in Paulding County.
It is my hope that this email contains everything that you need to make the two weeks a HUGE success. The pacing and success of the season hinges on the these two weeks of band camp. The time that we will spend working these two weeks is CRUCIAL TO THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGAM AND SHOW. Please read over the info included in this email, make sure your child has read the material, and then begin preparing now for camp. Start getting outside, experience the heat, and begin stretching and conditioning for band camp. It is very important that you are ready and prepared for the outside elements. It is non-productive when we are not ready and prepared to be in the heat. Over the course of the next week, I personally will spend an hour or so outside in the middle of the day when it is the warmest. PREPARE NOW.

INFO FOR OBTAINING YOUR MUSIC IS ATTACHED.

I have attached a copy of the season schedule which is a mandatory part of participating.

ATTENDANCE:

A successful band needs all of its members all of the time. An empty chair in the room or an empty spot on the field cannot learn. We will be learning new material for the next several months. Please plan accordingly. Lettering requirements will be based on attendance in addition to ensemble participation.

WATER COOLERS:

It is very important that every student has his/her own labeled water cooler. We will have refilling

stations for emergencies but with 200 students, YOU
MUST HAVE YOUR OWN CONTAINER
!

I suggest a half galloon cooler similar to this one which can be found at all our local big box stores,

drug stores, or grocery stores.

KNEE PADS:

FOR WOODWIND NAD BRASS: We rehearse on an asphalt parking that has been painted to replicate a football field. There will be times that students will be required to kneel, etc. Students will need to provide their own knee pad for each knee whether it is homemade, or store bought; as long as the knees are protected. Brand, style, color, type do not matter; whatever feel goods to you works for us.

WIRE MUSIC STAND:

FOR WOODWIND AND BRASS: Due to the size of the band program, students will need to provide their own wire music stand from home. Please make sure they are labeled with your name.

LUNCH AND DINNER:

Lunch will be at 12:30pm daily. Students may NOT leave campus for lunch. Students are to bring their own lunch. SNACKS ARE SUGGESTED FOR THE MORNING AND AFTERNOON BREAK.

During the second week, FULL BAND CAMP. Lunch will be the same as above and dinner will be from 5:30-6:15pm and will be provided. As soon as we have a menu, someone will send that out.

BEAT THE HEAT:

  • Gatorade or PowerAde is most times better than water.
  • A Snack mid-morning and a snack mid-afternoon will help you get through
    the day.
  • NO DAIRY FOR BREAKFAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • NO SUGARY CEREAL FOR BREAKFAST!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Start over hydrating now!
  • Get outside now and begin adjusting to the heat – condition yourself to
    be outside.
  • Water cooler – very important to stay hydrated, there is no water
fountain in the parking lot! Please mark you water cooler with your name. It should be (at
minimum) a half gallon insulated jug that can be purchased at store for under $10.
  • T-shirt – Light colored tank tops and sleeveless shirts are highly
recommended. An extra t-shirt is good to have in case of rain. You will probably get wet at
least one day. NO DARK COLORED CLOTHING!
  • Shorts – Comfortable, breathable shorts are highly recommended. NO JEANS
OR LONG PANTS ARE ALLOWED DURING REHEARSAL. It is a serious health risk if you wear long
pants due to the summer heat. NO DARK COLORED CLOTHING!
  • Socks and comfortable sneakers/tennis shoes
No sandals, flip flops or other shoes not deemed
appropriate for athletic activity will be allowed.
  • Sunglasses and Hat – It will keep the sun out of your eyes.
  • Sunscreen – Use sweat proof, the larger SPF number the better. YOU WILL
NEED TO REAPPLY EVERY OTHER WATER BREAK.
  • Bug spray – Optional but recommended especially during seasons with lots
    of mosquitoes.
  • Chap stick (optional)
  • Your instrument (yes, students have actually forgotten their
    instruments)
  • Pencils/ highlighter (sharpened with erasers) – YOUR FOLDER MUST HAVE A
PENCIL IN IT. (Folders provided on the first day.)
  • DRINK, DRINK, DRINK: You must stay hydrated, you will sweat a lot during
band camp, it’s hot on the pavement, we are outside.
  • NO CAFFEINE or carbonated beverages with caffeine, avoid sugar loaded
    drinks (Kool-Aid, soda, or juice) – it dehydrates you. Water, Gatorade, PowerAde is best;
    Did we mention to hydrate?

FOOD:

Please eat a healthy meal before you come to band camp. Contrary to what you may think, food on your stomach will not sit like a lump while you are marching. Your body needs fuel to perform at the level necessary for band camp. Avoid all caffeine, greasy foods, carbonated drinks with caffeine, excessive candy or sweets, and dairy foods. Pack some quick snacks like a piece of fruit, or an energy bar (not chocolate). The band booster parents provide dinner each night of the second week of band camp. Eat a banana every day as a good source of potassium (helps avoid muscle cramps!).

WHAT IS EXPECTED:

  • Expect to work and work really hard. Expect a suntan or sunburn, with
tan lines from your shirt and socks.
  • Expect to be sore and tired.
  • Expect to learn more in the two weeks of band camp than you have in the
    last year.
  • Expect the unexpected.
  • The leadership team works hard to provide a nurturing environment for
the first time members of the marching band. We look forward to a good camp, and a lot of
    fun.
  • Show up: Band camp is mandatory. You will need to arrange family
vacations, doctor’s visits, jobs, family time at a time other than during band camp. You
must attend ALL rehearsals with no interruptions.
  • The amount of work during Band camp is like 10 weeks of regular
rehearsals. We will learn our music and get a large chunk of our drill on the field. If one
person is missing, the entire band needs to review what was missed when you come back; it
    slows everyone down.
  • Be on Time: If you are early, you are on time; if you are on time you
are LATE. If you are LATE, it is unacceptable.
You are responsible for being on time, not
because of traffic, your parents oversleeping, or car trouble. You take full responsibility.
  • Behave: You are a young adult. Just get in line, stay in step, or do
whatever is asked of you. The staff and leadership are there for your benefit. If you work
really hard they will take note – as well as the other members around you. Being a young
adult is expected of you and helps to get things done a lot more quickly.
  • Keep cool: Physically and mentally, first make sure you are not
overheating (HYDRATE) but also keep a calm mind. When we have time to rest – REST!
  • Respect: Respect the directors, staff, leadership, upper classmen, and
parents that are helping. ALWAYS say, “Thank You!”

EXPECT TO HAVE FUN WORKING HARD!!!
